August dates

Accordistra--a new project I've been working on at my studio for the last few months has been temporarily delayed due to moving my studio and waiting for the dust to settle before doing further recordings. Composition and creating in the lab is moving ahead at an alternatingly furious and fractious pace. one track, 'Evening in the Garden of Dawn,' is completely finished. This track exemplifies some of the foundational elements of the album. There are 24 separate accordion tracks, organized like instruments in an orchestra (the accordion's registers have tones that emulate such instruments as 'bassoon,' 'violin,' 'clarinet,' 'piccolo,' and 'saxophone' and arranged to create harmonies and a veritable symphony of sounds utilizing the accordion's wide melodic and timbric range. I'll post sound files soon. Here are some shows coming up:

July 22--I'll accompany a wondrously gifted songwriter, Bahlmann Abbot, at the Gravity Lounge for his cd release party--visit www.gravity-lounge.com for more info on Bahlmann and his gaggle of friends and admirers who will be there with him. Show starts at 8 pm.

July 27--Jambalaya perform dixieland swing at a private reception.

July 31--Private event for Charlottesville's 'Artini' winners, sponsored by Absolut, on picturesque Water Street's Live Arts/Lighthouse/2nd Street Gallery roof.

August 5--Peyton Tochterman (www.peytontochterman.com) and High Society perform at Fellini's from 10 pm to 1 am tonight. movin' on over

I spent the last few weeks moving the entire music studio, and the wife's salon, back into our home-headquarters. This all-consuming excavation must excuse the lapse in updates for July, mustn't it? I belatedly present to you a run-down of shows coming up this month and next. The 'Accordistra' project, which i've never spoken of in these postings but which you must by now know about, unless you're not in the know, has been delayed by the aforementioned move, but composing and concocting is occuring at full-throttle. The concept of the project is to write and record orchestral and symphonic pieces for the accordion, using it's various tones, registers, and textures to create grandly designed mellifluence. One finished piece 'Evening in the Garden of Dawn' uses 24 seperately-tracked accordions. I will post an audio sample soon. In the meantime, here's them shows:

July 22-Saturday-Matty will be lending musical accompaniment to Bahlmann Abbot's tunes at his CD release party at the gravity lounge. Mary Gordon Hall opens at 8 pm. Call 434/977-5590 or visit www.gravity-lounge.com or just come on down to 103 South 1st Street Charlottesville VA 22902 at 8 this Saturday.

July 27-Thursday--Jambalaya, that smokin' good Dixieland swing band will be playing a private show. That seems like a let-down, but the next one will be open to all.

August 19--Saturday--Matty Metcalfe and Creu d' Bayou (formerly the Mudflaps) will perform at their favorite local joint Fellini's starting at 10 pm. Stop on down for some southern-fried cajun music.

August 26--Private gig in Okrakoke
